چکیده
The striking similarity of disc edema without leakage on fluorescein angiography, which is pathognomonic Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), was present in a patient with cystic fibrosis antibiotic toxic neuropathy. This suggested the common effect oxidative stress retinal ganglion cells inherited mitochondrial and neuropathies. We case advanced chronic treatment who experienced rapid painless bilateral visual decline over course few weeks. At examination, his corrected acuity reduced to 0.3 both eyes, dyschromatopsia central scotoma. appearance fundus resembled typical clinical features acute LHON hyperemic discs tortuous vessels no dye from angiography. Ganglion cell layer loss seen coherence tomography, all findings pointing LHON. Genetic testing did not reveal any LHON-specific mutations. After extended genetic testing, heterozygous variant c.209C>T OPA3 gene chromosome 19, g.46032648G>A, classified as unknown significance, also found. discontinuing antibiotics general improvements health, surprisingly, function completely improved. Later, he received lung transplant that further improved condition, vision remained normal. Excluding LHON, transient our could be mainly due toxicity linezolid ciprofloxacin, have been linked dysfunction hypoxic status. suggest possibility patients may more prone developing neuropathy, especially additional risk factors such therapy, affect function, can perhaps serve model for

Background Pulmonary involvement is the main cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). Airway clearance techniques are non-pharmacological complement options for CF patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of airway cleaning treatment in patients with cystic fibrosis in a children's hospital. Materials and Methods This clinical trial study conducted on 40 CF pati...
متن کاملOxidative stress during acute respiratory exacerbations in cystic fibrosis.
BACKGROUND Patients with cystic fibrosis experience chronic systemic oxidative stress. This is coupled with chronic inflammation of the lung involving bronchial polymorphonuclear neutrophil accumulation and activation. We hypothesised that, during periods of acute respiratory exacerbation, free radical activity and consequent damage would be most marked and that intensive treatment of the infec...

R elatively little progress has been made in developing therapies for mitochondrial diseases in modern medicine as a result of the exquisite complexity of the structural proteins and pathways associated with mitochondrial functions and our incomplete understanding of pathophysiology (1). Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), in particular, provides a unique model for understanding molecular...
متن کاملBreath isoprene during acute respiratory exacerbation in cystic fibrosis.
Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) experience a combination of chronic systemic oxidative stress, generation of free radicals in the lungs due to a hyperimmune response and a diminished ability to scavenge free radicals secondary to malabsorption and increased consumption. The authors asked the question, "Does breath isoprene content reflect systemic oxidative stress?" The study involved 12 CF ...

DOS Times Vol. 11, No. 8 February, 2006 These disorders are often grouped together as they cause a syndrome characterized by papillomacular bundle damage, central or cecocentral scotoma, and reduction of color vision. The anterior visual pathway is susceptible to damage from toxins or nutritional deficiency (Table 1). Both toxicity and malnutrition, acting either independently or together, have...
